Lobodice underground gas storage is the only aquifer storage and at the same time the first underground gas storage within the territory of the Czech Republic. It is situated in Hornomoravský valley basin, 13 kilometers to the southwest from Přerov, close to Lobodice municipality. Structures of the underground gas storage are located on both banks of original flood-plain meanders of Morava and Malá Bečva rivers, in large floodplain forest, part of which constitutes Zástudánčí national natural reservation.


Construction of aquifer underground gas storage in Lobodice was enabled by determination of a suitable natural earth structure while the first information in this respect was obtained already in 1942. Construction of a storage for surplus coke gas from Ostrava area commenced in 1962. Operation of the underground storage with the capacity of 100 million cubic meters and with the daily production capacity of 1 million cubic meters of coal gas commenced by first injection on May 25,1965. Extension of technology and additional withdrawal and injection wells were completed in 1975. In 1990, when last coal gas was withdrawn, the underground gas storage was switched over to the natural gas. The project of migration to natural gas was completed in 1995. It comprised construction of new technology and liquidation of old coal gas technology. Conversion to the natural gas helped to achieve the daily withdrawal capacity of 3.3 million cubic meters.


Lobodice structure forms part of Chropyňský valley basin. The bedrock consists of metamorphosed paleozoic rocks. It forms significant brachyanticline with considerable fracture damage, which is characterized mainly by chlorotic to chlorotic-serticithic vyplity and graphitic schists. The storage horizon (collectors) is formed by tertiary Baden basal clastics. These are polymict coarse grain sandstones and conglomeratic sandstones (breccia). The area for gas storage in the depth between 400 and 500 meters comprises basal clastics with average thickness of 12 meters and with average porosity of 24%. These strata were originally saturated by sea water and the gas deposit of aquifer type was created by water expulsion. Leak proofness of the storage structure towards the surface is ensured mainly by Neocene Baden sediments with thickness of 300 meters which are formed by calcareous clays of various grain sizes in lutaceous formations. Adjacent Pliocene formations consist of clays, sands, and gravels. The top quaternary layers gradually follow after the Pleiocene layers and form an uniform sedimentation formation.

Overground Part

The underground gas storage is connected to DN 500 PN 63 pipeline Bezměrov-Lobodice. The underground gas storage comprises one collection center.

The supply pipeline, multiple filters, overall natural gas quantity measurement, regulation and measuring run, connection, well.

Withdrawal Technology

Well, connection, regulation and measuring run, collector, gas drying, total measured quantity, regulating run, outlet and measurement of gas.

The underground gas storage control system is used to monitor, control, and operate individual technical processes. It has a hierarchic, multi-layer structure and it is autonomous, with minimal dependencies.

Project Decentralization of heating CA PZP Lobodice

There is a request for co-financing of the project Decentralization of Heating of CA PZP Lobodice together with the European Union. The aim of the project is to increase the energy efficiency of the heating of the operational premises of the underground gas storage facility by replacing the existing boilers in the central boiler room with smaller but more energy efficient condensing boilers in individual operational buildings.
